Philip Roberts is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) at our college’s counseling center.SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER (SAD)
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a condition that usually affects people during the fall and winter months of the year. With reduced day light during this time of year, some individuals experience symptoms of seasonal depression. Some typical symptoms of depression include sleep disturbance; increased sadness; social isolation; difficulty concentrating; increased irritability and fatigue. Please note that specific questions about your student who may be using the Counseling Center Services can not be answered.
If your daughter or son is exhibiting these symptoms and you suspect that they are depressed during this time of year, they may have SAD. You can talk with them about SAD and encourage them to make an appointment with a counselor at the college’s Counseling Center. Our services are confidential and free to currently enrolled students. You can also encourage them to talk with their primary care physician about the possible use of an anti-depressant, particularly if their depressive symptoms are moderate to severe. Please direct ANY questions related to counseling and adjustment issues to Philip by interacting on this blog.
